Daniel D’Alcântara
Daniel D’Alcântara has a bachelor’s degree in trumpet from the University of São Paulo (ECA-USP). He began his musical studies with his father, trumpetist Magno de Alcântara.
From 1992 to 1998, he was a member of the ensemble, Orquestra Experimental de Repertório. Daniel has participated in a variety of musical events teaching trumpet, including the Campos do Jordão Winter Festival (2000), Brasilia’s Summer Festival (2000 e 2001), the Tatuí/SP Winter Festival (2002 e 2004), and the Curitiba Music Workshop (2006). He has also been part pf the teaching staff at the Tatuí Music Conservatory and served as their professor of trumpet in popular music and MPB for five years (1997-2002).
Daniel has participated in rock tours in Brazil with the band Deep Purple and the singer Alice Cooper and has accompanied acclaimed Brazilian artists João Donato, Roberto Menescal, Ivan Lins, Leny Andrade, Joyce, Claudete Soares, Filó Machado, Rosa Passos, Milton Nascimento, Max de Castro, Pedro Mariano, Eugenia Melo and Castro. In 2001, Daniel recorded his first CD, “Horizonte”, in partnership with the drummer Edu Ribeiro. Daniel also participated in the “Chivas Jazz Festival 2003”, as a member of American sax player Lee Konitz’s nonet.
As a guest soloist with the jazz ensemble, Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica, Daniel participated in two world premiers, one being the 2004 “Thaddeus”, by Alexandre Mihanovich, and in 2005 at the Campos do Jordão Winter Festival, the piece “Brasilianas No.4”, written and directed by Cyro Pereira. Since April of 2005, invited by the Weril musical instrument factory, Daniel has been administering workshops in Brazilian instrumental music in diverse conservatories and universities in Europe, passing through the countries Italy, France, Germany, England, Russia, Belgium, Astonia, and Spain. Daniel currently teaches in the Tom Jobim Center for Musical Studies (ULM) and the Souza Lima & Berklee College program.
In 2007, Daniel played in the big band directed by Maria Schneider and made up of Brazilian musicians to perform Ms. Schneider’s compositions in the Ouro Preto-Minas Gerais Jazz Festival. Daniel is a member of the group, Soundscape Big Band Jazz, and participates constantly in recording sessions and performances of Brazilian instrumental music. Daniel’s second CD, “Lote 502”, which includes great musicians from São Paulo’s jazz scene, is expected to be released this year
