Gilberto De Syllos

Mr. De Syllos received his bachelor’s degree in music from Campinas State University, (Unicamp). He has dedicated himself to playing the bass since 1995.
Mr. De Syllos began his musical studies on acoustic guitar, but became a bassist at age 17. Since then he has studied at CLAM (Zimbo Trio), wich Claudio Bertrami (Medusa), Paulo Pugliesi, Jorge Oscar (Unicamp) and at the Tatui Music Conservatory.
In 1997, he released the CD, “Tocando Baixo”, which was awarded the 1997 Sharp prize. In 2003, he published the book, “Drums and Contrabass in Popular Brazilian Music” (Editora Lumiar, 2003) along with Ramon Montanhaur. It was produced by Alexandre Pavan. Mr. De Syllos taught contrabass and taught the history of Brazilian popular music at the Faculdade Paulista de Artes. (2002/2003)
Alongside the tap dancer and saxophonist Christiane Matallo, Mr. De Syllos have been developing a research project that combines bass, tap dancing, and body percussion with elements of Brazilian culture. The two went on tour in the United States between 2005 and 2007 with the show titled, “ From String to the Feet.” On tour, they participated in some of the most important tap dancing festivals and gave workshops on Brazilian music.
Mr. De Syllos is the musical director for the DVDs, “The Art of Tap Danicing with Christiane Matallo” (2006), which is released in 31 countries. In partnership with Marcelo Onofri, Mr. De Syllos composed the sound track to “Noir,” a Diego Ruiz de Aquino and Helton Ladeira movie (Paprika Filmes/ 2007) Mr. De Syllos has been a member of important instrumental music groups like Gaveta (1988), Sotrix (1990), Grupo de Musica Brasileira (NIDIC / Unicamp – 1999), Marco Ferrari Grupo (L/2000) , Ramon Montanhaur Group (Boyya”/2000) Hot Jazz Culb “Matisse”/2004, with Zuza Homem de Mello producing), and more.
Mr. De Syllos has performed as a bassist and acoustic guitarist in musical presentations in Sao Paulo like, “Suburbano Coração”, by Chico Buarque and Naum Alves de Souza (2003) and “Cole Porter… He Never Said He Loved Me,” by Cláudio Botelho and Charles Moller (2004). In 2008, Mr. De Syllos starred in and wrote the sountrack for the show entitled, “Pincel do Som ( the paint¬brush of sound), alongside Christiane Matallo, Marcela Benvegnu and Rabecão da Silva. He also served as musical director for this performance, that unites music, dance, and art.
He plays in recording studios and has played for endless numbers of Cds and shows in a wide variety of styles for artists like Pedro de Alcântara (“Pedra Coração” / 2002),Vânia Lucas(“Minha Vontade”/ 2006), Mário Feres, Paulo Jobim, Hermeto Paschoal, Roberto Menescal, Izabel Pado¬vani, and Renato Braz (“Desassossego” / 2006), among others. Since 2002 he has been part of the group that accompanies the compos¬er, pianist, and singer Marcelo Onofri. They recorded “Dança”(2003) and later “Temporâneo” (2007), in which De Syllos acts as musical di¬rector. He is also the director and musical producer of RN Studios.
He performs with his group (Gilberto de Syllos Group), he performs as a duet with saxophonist, Flávio Corilow (Dualle), and he performs with drummer and professor Carlos Ezequiel. Mr. De Syllos has been a professor at Faculdade Berklee Souza Lima, in Sao Paulo, since 2002. He is responsible for the technical course in contrabass.
